There is a place in the Middle of Nowhere that awakens something in my soul that cannot be explained in any logical way, it has to be experienced. The Tankwa Karoo is magical place that has a strange attraction to it. It is one of the driest areas in South Africa and some of the areas within i only gets about 20 mm of rain a year! I lived not to far from the Tankwa for about 4 years and i regularly visited the area with friends and colleagues. We worked at Kagga Kamma Nature Reserve and we were far away from from "everything", except the Tankwa Karoo.

Our closest bar from the reserve was the Tankwa Padstal, a very casual get together for bikers, "hippies" and free spirit people alike. They make an awesome "roosterkoek burger" and have cold beer all year round round, even in 50 plus degrees Celsius.
The Tankwa Karoo is also the place where thousands of people gather for the annual Africa Burn, a festival of art and radical self-expression. A paradoxical event that i still struggle to make sense off. Thousands of people gathering in one place for one reason proclaiming peace, love and harmony with nature while trampling the soil over and over again is pretty high up there when it comes to conservation standards. Enough of that, this is about the beauty of the place not about the irony of man...

Reason 1 : The Distance
If you are looking for distance them the Tankwa Karoo is your answer. The R355, which is the main road running through the Tankwa is the shortest way between Ceres and Calvinia, it is however the longest road between any two towns in the country. Gravel road most of the way!!! Awesome for us adventure riders.

Reason 2: The People
The people that stay in this place stay there because they want to, not because they have to. You will meet some awesome people here that now what it means to work hard and earn an honest living. Most of them are always willing to assist a person in need, note, this does not count for all of the Tankwa population.
Reason 3: The Speed
Here you can let go and ride at speeds of 200km/h plus without the worry of cops and other stupid vehicle along the way. I need to put a disclaimer on that statement though, stupid people are everywhere, not just in the city, and idiots are everywhere! Cruise comfortably at 160 km/h on the dirt, just watch out for the odd piece of shale lying in the road trying to ruin your tires. Please keep in mind that this is just a joke and not a recommendation, no one should go that fast!

Awesome Pics boet.....slow down some!
